How to Do SEO on WordPress

Check WordPress indexing, titles, descriptions, sitemaps and internal links. Learn what to verify before adding plugins or changing an established site.

To do SEO on WordPress, check that the live site allows indexing, keep a consistent URL structure, give important pages accurate titles and descriptions, provide crawlable links, and verify the output in Google Search Console. An SEO plugin can manage parts of the setup, but installing it does not make a page useful or guarantee a ranking.

Niwa works inside the WordPress business context and can help an owner with supported page edits through the available tools. Start with a specific request, such as improving one service description, rather than asking for unrestricted changes across the entire site.

Confirm you are working on the live website

Make a backup appropriate to the changes and identify the site URL. A staging copy can look identical to production while correctly blocking indexing. Keep its protections in place.

On the public website, open Settings → Reading. Review "Discourage search engines from indexing this site". If the live business site should be indexed, an accidental restriction needs correction. WordPress documents this in the Reading settings guide. Also check any page-specific noindex controls, hosting restrictions and robots directives.

Use Search Console URL Inspection on an important public page. A working browser page and an indexable page are related checks, but they are not the same test.

Preserve established URLs

For a new site, choose readable, stable permalinks. For an existing site, do not change the permalink structure simply because another format looks tidier. Customers, search engines and other websites may already use those URLs.

When a URL genuinely must change, plan a redirect to the relevant replacement and update internal links. Check the final destination rather than relying on a plugin's success message. Avoid sending every removed service or product to an unrelated homepage.

Decide which tool controls the SEO output

Inventory the active theme and plugins before installing another SEO tool. Identify which component creates titles, descriptions, canonical tags, structured data and sitemaps. Two components outputting conflicting tags can make the setup harder to understand.

Analytics tools report visits; Search Console reports search performance; SEO controls manage specific page output. These jobs may share an integration plugin, but they are not interchangeable. Choose the setup your site needs and check its actual HTML.

If you migrate between SEO plugins, preserve existing metadata and settings before removing the previous tool. Do not assume an internal "focus keyword" field will transfer or that losing it means your published page lost its topic.

Edit the pages customers need

In the page editor, make the main heading specific. Explain the service or product, its scope and the next action. In the SEO controls, write a distinct title and description for that page.

For a fictional repair business, "Bicycle Servicing in Bristol | Cedar Workshop" describes a real page more clearly than "Home | Quality | Affordable | Repairs". Use a real location only when it matches the business.

With Niwa, supply the approved service details and the exact page URL. Ask for a draft of missing information, review it and approve the supported change. Niwa's website maintenance workflow explains why a defined task and result check matter. Keep the existing SEO tool responsible for metadata unless its editable fields are explicitly available in your installation.

Important pages should be reachable from navigation or relevant content. Link text should describe the destination. Add useful alternative text for informative images and size images appropriately for their displayed role.

Inspect the site's actual sitemap address. WordPress provides native sitemaps, and SEO plugins may use a different route. Submit the sitemap that accurately lists the intended canonical pages. Avoid assuming every archive, search result or filter deserves indexing.

Verify after saving

Open the page in a signed-out browser. Check the heading, browser title, description tag, canonical URL and working links. Inspect a phone layout and the contact or purchase action. If the old text remains, investigate caching before making the same edit again.

Compare relevant queries and pages in Search Console over sensible periods. A plugin score can flag editorial suggestions, but it is not a Google ranking measurement. The WordPress SEO documentation is a useful reference for the platform fundamentals.

You can add Niwa to an existing WordPress site with the standalone plugin. For a site build or migration, Niwa Business is USD 150 and includes hosting, maintenance and business-specific AI adaptation. Share your WordPress URL and the task you want help with, so the setup can be matched to the site rather than adding tools without a clear purpose.
