WordPress form uploads failing? Check the right limit

Trace a rejected project photo from the form's file rules to the server and notification settings, then test the route your customer actually uses.

A customer fills in your quote form, adds a project photo, and gets an error. The same form works when they leave the photo out. Before changing your hosting plan, check the upload field itself: the formats it accepts, its file-size limit, and how many files it allows.

A WordPress form upload passes through several separate checks. The browser helps select a file, the form applies its rules, and the server handles the request. Sending that file to your team’s inbox is another step. Finding the point where it stops gives you a specific repair to make.

Start with one file and the exact error

Consider a fictional remodeling company in Denver. Its estimate page asks for kitchen photos. A customer reports that the form rejects one image, while the owner has successfully tested a small sample photo. Those are different tests. Record the failing file’s format and size, the device and browser, and the message shown beside the field.

Use a harmless sample file for your own test. Open the published quote page as a visitor, choose the file, and watch when the error appears. If the upload is optional, compare a submission without it. Keep the rest of the test the same so you can tell what changed.

Where the file stops determines what to inspect
What you see First check
File cannot be selected Accepted formats in the file picker.
File is rejected after selection Field type, size and count rules.
Upload stalls or request fails Browser response and server limits.
Message arrives without the file Notification attachment settings.

This is a way to narrow the investigation, not a diagnosis from the error’s position alone. A form can report a server rejection beside an upload field. Keep the exact message and test time when handing the problem to your developer or host.

Read the upload field’s own rules

Find the form that is actually embedded on the quote page. Note its plugin or external provider and form ID. A page containing a form shortcode may show you where the form appears without exposing its upload settings.

For WPForms, the official File Upload field guide describes allowed extensions and a Max File Size setting. The field can impose a lower limit than the server. Its Modern style supports multiple files; the Classic style does not support multiple files in one field. Check the configuration you are using before changing the instructions on the page.

The browser’s file picker is only part of the process. MDN explains that the HTML accept attribute guides file selection but does not validate the selected file. The receiving system still needs to enforce its requirements. Seeing a file in the picker does not establish that the form will accept it.

For the Denver example, suppose the configured field accepts JPG and PNG files up to 5 MB. A larger image needs a different response from a PDF that is outside that list. These are illustrative settings, not a recommendation for every business. First decide which documents your team needs, then make the field and its instructions agree.

Check the server limit without guessing a new number

WordPress exposes useful diagnostic information under Tools → Site Health → Info. The Site Health documentation describes Media handling and Server sections, including the maximum size of one uploaded file and the maximum size of posted data. Record the reported values. This screen helps you inspect the setup; it does not make a larger limit take effect.

Two PHP settings answer different questions. upload_max_filesize concerns an individual file, while post_max_size concerns the request’s posted data. The PHP manual explains their relationship. When several files travel in one request, the request limit must accommodate their combined data as well as the other form data. Uploaders that send files in separate requests or chunks need to be assessed according to their actual implementation.

WordPress’s maximum-upload-size function starts with the smaller of those two PHP values and then applies a filter. That helps explain a WordPress upload figure. It does not establish every form plugin’s independent field rules or an external form service’s limits.

If the host needs to investigate, send the page URL, form identity, test time, file format and size, and the observed error. Ask which limit rejected that request and what upload size the service supports. Increasing a number without that evidence can leave the original problem in place.

Check how the uploaded file reaches your team

If the message arrives but the photo is missing, inspect the notification configuration before repeating upload tests. A link to an uploaded file and a file attached to an email are different delivery choices.

WPForms documents upload links in notifications and a separate option for email attachments. Contact Form 7 also requires a separate mail setup: its file-upload documentation shows how the upload field’s corresponding mail-tag belongs in the Mail tab’s File attachments box. Putting a field on the form does not complete that second step.

Confirm what your team is supposed to receive, then open the sample file through that route. Check any relevant email-provider attachment limit separately. Avoid treating a successful form banner as proof that the file reached the person preparing the estimate.

Make the next attempt easier for the visitor

Replace a vague “Upload your files” label with the rules the field actually enforces. For the fictional example, if you have configured and tested these limits, the helper text could read:

Add up to three project photos in JPG or PNG format, no more than 5 MB each. Photos are optional; you can send the estimate request without them.

Use that wording only if all of those conditions are true. If photos are required for your process, explain the supported alternative when a visitor cannot upload them. The guide to shortening a contact form can help you decide what belongs in the first request.

After the correction, test an allowed sample, a file above the chosen limit, and the configured file-count boundary. Check the error and success messages on a phone as well as a desktop. Confirm that the accepted file reaches the intended destination. Keep the sample name and result in the change notes so the next person can repeat the check.

Where Niwa fits in the repair

Niwa can read stored WordPress page content and prepare an update for review. That is useful when the quote page gives the wrong format instructions or needs a clearer explanation beside the form. Its website maintenance workflow starts with a defined page and an observable problem.

Editing that page does not itself change a form plugin’s upload rules, the host’s PHP configuration, or an external service. Have the relevant operator confirm those settings, then update the visitor-facing copy to match. A useful request to Niwa identifies the page, the verified rules and the wording to change.
