Fix a WordPress phone link that calls the wrong number

Check why a WordPress call button opens the wrong number, repair its destination at the right source, and verify what happens on a real phone.

Ivory and sage interlocking rings beside a sage telephone handset and a card with a phone button icon.

A customer taps the number on your WordPress website and reaches the old office. You check the page: the new number is right there. The problem may be underneath it. A phone link has visible text and a separate destination, and changing one does not necessarily change the other.

Start by comparing those two values. Then check where WordPress stores the link and what a real phone does with it. This guide uses a fictional Chicago auto repair shop to show the process; substitute your business’s approved number before saving anything.

Compare the displayed number with the actual link

On a desktop, right-click the affected number or call button and copy its link address into a plain-text note. You can also select the link in the WordPress editor and inspect its destination. Do this for the exact button customers use, including a separate mobile button if your site has one.

A standard phone link starts with tel:. The visible label might say “Call the shop” or show a formatted number, while its destination contains different digits. For our fictional shop, the intended display is (312) 555-0146. These examples show what to compare:

What you inspect What it tells you
Visible text: (312) 555-0146 The number the customer reads.
Link: tel:+13125550109 The destination still points to a different number.
Intended link: tel:+13125550146 The destination matches the displayed digits.

The example numbers use the fictional range documented by NANPA; they are not numbers to call. Your website needs the real number approved for that location.

For a US number, a straightforward destination uses tel:, then +1, then the ten-digit number. Keep spaces out of that destination. The telephone URI standard, RFC 3966, defines the global format with a leading plus sign and country code. You can still use spaces and punctuation in the text visitors read. Do not put https:// before tel:.

Fix the destination in the WordPress editor

If the link belongs to the page itself, open that page for editing. Record the old destination first so you can compare the change. Then:

  1. Select the individual call button inside the Buttons block, or select the linked number in a Paragraph block.
  2. Open the link control and replace the destination with the approved tel: value. Check every digit, including the area code.
  3. Check the visible text separately. A correct destination does not repair an outdated number in the label.
  4. Apply the link edit, save the page and reopen the public page to inspect the saved destination.

WordPress documents the button’s link control in its Buttons block guide. For a linked text number, WordPress.com’s phone-link walkthrough shows the same tel: approach. You do not need a separate call-button plugin for a standard link in these blocks.

Avoid replacing every occurrence of the old number across the site in one pass. Your sales desk, second location and after-hours service may have different approved destinations. Make a short list of the pages and buttons that should share this number.

If the number is in the header, edit its source

A number that appears above every page may not be stored in the page you opened. With a block theme, it may be in a header or footer template part. With another setup, the theme’s controls or a page builder may own that element. Identify its source before making the change.

WordPress explains that editing a template part updates the templates that use it. Check that wider scope before saving a shared header. Afterward, inspect at least one other page that uses the same part, plus any mobile header variant.

If a call-tracking service manages the number, confirm the intended number and forwarding destination with the person responsible for that setup. A separate campaign number may be intentional. Replacing it with the main office number without that check can change what the campaign is meant to measure.

Test the phone handoff, then the call destination

Open the public page on a real phone. Tap the repaired link and compare the number shown by the calling app with the approved number. Arrange any completed test call with someone at the business who can confirm which desk or location receives it. A correct number in the dialer and a correctly routed call are separate checks.

Repeat the link check on desktop, but interpret the result carefully. MDN’s anchor-element documentation explains that telephone-link behavior depends on the device and available software. A desktop may offer a calling app or another way to handle the number. It does not have to behave like your phone.

Keep a readable number near a button labeled “Call the shop,” so someone can dial it another way. Check that the link can be reached with a keyboard and that the mobile button is easy to tap without hitting a neighboring control.

If the dialer shows the right number but the wrong team answers, review phone routing with the person who manages the line. Changing WordPress text again will not resolve a forwarding rule outside the website.

When the phone link is stored in ordinary page content, Niwa can read that content and prepare a page update for review. Give it the exact page and approved number, then ask to see the proposed change before approving it. For example:

“Inspect the call link in this page’s stored content. Compare its visible number and destination with the approved number I provide. Prepare a correction and show the updated page content for review. Keep the other links and sections unchanged.”

Review the whole proposed page content, including the digits, surrounding text and other links. The page-content update writes the complete content, so a one-link request still deserves a full comparison. This workflow does not establish that Niwa can change your theme’s shared header, every builder field or your telephone service’s forwarding settings.

Record what passed before calling it fixed

Keep a brief handover note: the page URL, where the link was stored, its final destination, the mobile result and who confirmed the receiving line. Repeat the check for the other buttons on your list. That gives the next person a useful record when a number changes again.

Do not treat a click count as proof that calls connected. Our guide to tracking sales after a phone call explains the separate steps between clicking a number, reaching the business and recording a sale.
