What Is CRO?

Learn what CRO means, which actions count as conversions and how WordPress businesses can evaluate customer assistance using useful business outcomes.

CRO stands for conversion rate optimization. It is the work of helping a larger share of eligible website visitors complete a useful action, such as buying a product, sending a qualified enquiry or reserving an appointment. You study where people struggle, improve that part of the experience and measure whether the change helps.

The business outcome matters. A page that produces more form submissions but fewer paying customers has not necessarily improved.

For a WordPress business, Niwa can be part of that work when visitors need answers before deciding. Its storefront assistant helps people explore products using the site's information. That gives you a concrete improvement to evaluate: can a visitor resolve a product question and continue to a completed purchase?

What counts as a conversion?

A conversion is an action you decide to measure because it matters to the business. The same action can mean different things on different websites.

For a shop, a completed order is usually a primary conversion. Adding an item to the cart is an intermediate step. For a service business, a saved appointment or qualified enquiry may be the primary goal. Opening the calendar is only evidence that someone reached it.

Choose one clear primary outcome before you start. Write down what makes it valid. For example, a lead could require a successfully received enquiry about a service you actually provide. Counting every click on the contact button would describe a different event.

How conversion rate works

A simple session-based conversion rate is:

Sessions containing the chosen conversion ÷ eligible sessions × 100.

In an illustrative example, 40 of 2,000 eligible sessions contain a purchase. The purchase session conversion rate is 2%.

If a change later produces 50 converting sessions from 2,000 eligible sessions, the rate is 2.5%. That is an increase of 0.5 percentage points, or 25% relative to the original 2%. These are different ways of describing the same change, not results from a Niwa customer.

You can also calculate a user-based rate. Keep the definition consistent when comparing periods. Google Analytics offers separate session and user key event rate metrics. Raw event counts are a different measure because one person can trigger the same event several times.

What CRO changes in practice

CRO can address missing information, confusing choices, failed forms, unclear delivery terms or difficulty completing a task on a phone. A different button colour is only useful when it addresses a real problem or a testable idea.

Consider a hypothetical footwear store. Visitors repeatedly ask which model suits their work and whether a particular size is available. The owner could improve the product descriptions, make the size choices clearer and configure Niwa with accurate catalogue information so visitors can ask follow-up questions.

The measurement should include completed purchases, returns and the usefulness of the advice. A rise in chat openings alone would not establish that customers are buying more successfully.

CXL's conversion research approach brings together technical checks, analytics and customer research. The practical point is to investigate the obstacle before choosing the treatment.

Where AI fits

A website built with AI may have AI-assisted copy, design or code. An AI-powered website uses AI after launch to help visitors or the owner complete tasks.

With Niwa, customers can resolve a question and complete the next business action in the same conversation. For a service business, Niwa uses the website's business context to explain services, check availability and complete a reservation on the website or directly in WhatsApp. Its booking workflow gives you a concrete CRO outcome to measure: a saved appointment, rather than just a chat opening.

Prepare accurate service or product details and configure the booking or sales workflow. Measure the confirmed outcome with a consistent denominator, and use a planned experiment when you need to establish the effect of a change.

How do you know whether CRO worked?

A randomized A/B test can compare a current version with a changed version when enough eligible traffic is available. Define the outcome, required sample and decision rule in advance.

With limited traffic, usability checks and customer questions can still identify clear problems. Fixing a broken submission is worthwhile even when a statistical experiment would take too long. However, a before-and-after increase is not proof that your change caused it. Traffic quality, prices, promotions and seasonality can all affect the result.

Review revenue or lead quality alongside the conversion rate. For bookings, check cancellations and attendance too. CRO should help the business complete useful work, rather than make a dashboard look busier.

Start with one customer task

Pick the task visitors should complete and the question that most often interrupts it. Confirm that the outcome is recorded correctly, then improve that specific journey.

Existing WordPress owners can install the standalone Niwa plugin.
