What Is Average Order Value?

Learn what average order value means, how the AOV formula works and why larger orders do not always mean more profit for your online store.

Original illustrative diagram. Figures are educational examples.

Average order value (AOV) is the average revenue generated by one order over a defined period. Calculate it by dividing the revenue included in your report by the number of orders in that same report. If 100 orders generate $6,000, the AOV is $60.

That number tells you how large the average purchase is. It does not tell you how much profit you keep, how many visitors buy or how often a customer returns.

For a WooCommerce store, Niwa's storefront assistant can help customers compare products, choose a variant and find a relevant companion item. AOV is one way to evaluate that work, alongside completed orders, refunds and margin. A recommendation alone is not evidence of an increase.

What does the AOV formula include?

The basic formula is:

Average order value = included revenue divided by included orders

The word "included" matters. WooCommerce Analytics uses net sales divided by orders. Its net sales deduct coupons and returns from gross product sales. Taxes and shipping are separate metrics.

Another platform may define the number differently. Before comparing reports, check the revenue basis, order statuses, date range and refund treatment. Use the same definition every time you compare a result.

AOV is an order metric, not a customer metric. A customer who places three separate orders contributes three orders to the denominator, even if all three purchases happen on the same day.

A simple example

Imagine an online footwear store with these three orders, measured after discounts and before tax and shipping:

  • One pair of shoes: $60.
  • Shoes and a care product: $75.
  • Two pairs of shoes: $120.

The included revenue is $255 across three orders. AOV is $85.

No customer spent exactly $85. The average summarizes different purchases. It also hides their distribution. A few very large orders can lift AOV while most customers still buy a single inexpensive item.

For that reason, look at the order count and the typical basket as well. When practical, compare median order value, which is the middle order in a sorted list. It is less affected by unusually large orders.

How is AOV useful?

AOV helps you assess product mix, baskets and offers. A fall might reflect more first-time buyers purchasing an entry product. A rise might reflect more multi-item baskets, a price change or a large wholesale order.

It also helps connect revenue to order volume. Under the same definition, 200 orders at $60 AOV produce $12,000 in included revenue. If AOV rises to $70 but orders fall to 150, revenue becomes $10,500. Larger average orders did not produce more revenue in that example.

The useful question is what changed inside the purchases, and whether the business benefits from that change.

Use Niwa to help customers build a suitable basket

Start with one buying decision your store can answer well. For footwear, that might be selecting a work shoe and understanding how to care for its material.

Prepare accurate prices, sizes, stock and care instructions. Configure relevant product relationships. Test whether Niwa explains the difference between two models and directs the customer to the appropriate available option. A care product should appear because it suits the purchase, with a clear price and an optional choice.

Keep your reporting definition fixed while you evaluate the workflow. Compare AOV with order volume, conversion, refunds and contribution after variable costs. Changes in campaigns, prices or traffic can affect the result, so a before-and-after comparison does not prove Niwa caused it.

This is a website powered by AI during customer decisions. A website built with AI refers to how the site was created. The two describe different things.
