Wrong Google Maps location on WordPress? Fix the destination
Check the address on your contact page, the map it embeds and the place opened by its directions button so customers can reach the right entrance.
The address on your contact page is correct, but a customer taps “Get directions” and ends up at your old location. Changing the address text again will not repair a button that still points somewhere else.
When Google Maps shows the wrong location on a WordPress website, compare three things separately: the written address, the embedded map, and the destination opened by the directions link. Then check whether Google itself has the right place. Each can need a different correction.
Find which part sends people to the wrong place
Imagine a fictional bicycle repair shop in Austin, Texas. It has moved to another unit in the same commercial building. The contact-page paragraph names the new suite, the map still shows the building, and the button opens a saved link to the old shop. The owner sees a familiar map and assumes everything agrees.
Open the published page as a visitor. Read the address, inspect the place named inside the map, then open the directions button. Write down what each one shows before editing anything.
| What is wrong | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| Written address | Page text or shared contact section. |
| Map shown on the page | Embed, map block or plugin settings. |
| Directions destination | The button’s saved link. |
| Place on Google Maps itself | The relevant Google place or Business Profile. |
Keep the page URL and the actual link destination in your notes. “The map is wrong” leaves several possibilities open. “The contact-page button opens the former address” identifies the part to repair.
Check the place on Google before copying a new link
Search Google Maps for the business and inspect the exact result. Check the business name, street address, city, state and ZIP code, plus any suite information. If there are multiple branches or similar names, do not copy the first result without opening it.
If the business’s own listing is inaccurate, the person who manages it should use Google’s Business Profile address and pin instructions. The documentation separates editing the address from adjusting the pin. A WordPress page edit does not make either change in Google. After saving a profile correction, verify the public result; do not assume it appeared immediately.
A correct business pin also does not explain every visiting arrangement. The Austin shop may need a sentence about which entrance customers use. Confirm that detail with staff instead of moving the business pin to an unrelated parking space. A wrong route to an otherwise correct destination is a separate problem to report through Google’s directions feedback process.
This guide concerns a location customers actually visit. Businesses that travel to customers should review Google’s service-area guidance before publishing a directions button to a private base. Niwa’s local SEO overview explains why website information and an external Business Profile are separate parts of the work.
Repair the directions button’s saved destination
In WordPress, find the button on the affected page. For a standard Button block, select the individual button and inspect its link using the toolbar. The Buttons block documentation shows that control. A builder or theme component may store its link elsewhere, so identify the component before replacing it.
Copy the intended location link from the correct Google Maps result and test it before saving it to the button. Avoid accidentally copying directions with your own home or office fixed as everyone’s starting point. Check what a visitor will be asked to enter.
For a developer constructing the link, Google’s Maps URLs guide documents separate search and directions actions. These cross-platform URLs do not require a Google API key. Their documented format requires api=1; a directions URL uses destination for the endpoint. A verified destination_place_id can identify a specific place, and it must be accompanied by destination. Encode the values correctly and test the resulting place. Do not invent a place ID or assume that a business name identifies one branch.
Give the button a label that tells people what it opens. For the fictional shop, “Directions to our Austin workshop” is more useful than “Click here.” W3C’s link-purpose guidance explains why the destination or purpose should be understandable from the link and its context. Clear wording still needs a correct URL behind it.
Update the embedded map through the component that owns it
If the directions button is correct but the map on the page is wrong, inspect the map separately. It might come from pasted HTML, a map plugin, a builder widget or a shared template. Changing a nearby paragraph will not change those settings.
Google’s sharing and embedding instructions distinguish copying a link from choosing Embed a map and copying HTML. Select the intended place or map view before creating the replacement. Keep the previous embed available until you have checked the new one.
For a Custom HTML block, use the site’s supported editing workflow and check the saved result. WordPress’s Custom HTML documentation notes that disallowed markup, including an iframe, can be removed when the editor lacks the relevant capability. If the embed disappears after saving, ask the site operator to use the appropriate supported map or embed component.
A map plugin needs its own location or marker settings reviewed. If the map is shared across several pages, check those pages too. The test is whether the public map identifies the intended place after the change, not whether the editor accepted a save.
Make the last few steps clear, then test the page on a phone
Publish practical entrance instructions as ordinary page text. In the fictional example, staff might approve: “Use the courtyard entrance beside the bicycle racks. Repairs are checked in at the workshop desk.” Use wording like this only when it describes the real premises. Verify parking or access details before stating them.
Ask someone who did not make the edit to start from the contact page and answer three questions: Which location am I visiting? Where does the directions button take me? Which entrance should I use when I arrive?
Repeat the page check on a phone. The link may open the Maps app or a browser, depending on the device and installed apps. Confirm the selected destination in that view, not just the fact that something opened. Keep the address and a plain directions link usable if the embedded map is unavailable.
If an ordinary visitor still sees the old version, compare the published page with the saved edit and use the site’s normal cache-refresh process where needed. Finish by recording the public URL, tested destination and date. A successful test from inside the editor is not the same as checking the page customers use.
Give Niwa a specific contact-page correction
Niwa can inspect stored WordPress page content and prepare a content update for review. For this task, provide the affected page, the verified address, the tested destination link and any approved entrance instructions. The website maintenance workflow explains how to turn a visible problem into work with a defined scope.
The available editing route matters. A text or link update should preserve the existing map, and a page containing an embed needs its saved rendering checked. Do not assume a content edit changes a map plugin, shared template or Google Business Profile. Those require their own supported access and verification.
