Do I Need to Pay for an AI API to Run My Website?
An AI API bill is not required for every website. Distinguish generated pages, supported subscription connections, hosted credits and separately billed APIs.
No, not every website needs a paid AI API. If AI helped create the finished pages, serving those pages does not itself require new model calls. If your website uses AI after launch, it needs a working model connection, but that connection may use a supported subscription or a hosted service rather than your own separately billed API account.
Niwa supports connecting your own AI subscription where the provider, account and connection are supported. On that connection, Niwa adds no extra AI usage charges or Niwa-imposed usage limits. Your provider's subscription price, allowances and account rules still apply. An API-based connection is a separate option, not a requirement for every Niwa installation.
Identify what the website is using AI for
A page whose text or layout was generated with AI can be delivered like other finished website content. The original generation may have been part of a paid tool or service, but it does not follow that each visitor creates another AI invoice.
An active assistant is different. When a customer asks a product question, the installation sends relevant information to a model and uses the response in the customer journey. A business also needs accurate product or service information and the permitted tools for the task. The AI-powered website guide explains this distinction through practical business work.
For booking, the customer needs current availability and a saved reservation. Choose a connection that supports the model and configured tools needed to complete that task.
A supported subscription is one connection arrangement
With an eligible own-subscription connection in Niwa, connect the account using the documented authorisation route and select the available model. You do not need to create an unrelated API-key setup just because a general chatbot tutorial uses one.
Check eligibility, account permissions and the provider's terms before assuming an existing subscription will work. A business workspace may have administrator-controlled settings. The model list and account allowances belong to the actual supported connection.
Niwa's installation guide documents subscription sign-in and API alternatives. Follow the instructions for the selected mode. A disconnected or expired authorisation needs attention even when no separate API invoice is involved.
An API account has its own billing
An API integration normally uses credentials for the provider's API service. Its cost depends on the models, usage categories and additional services selected. The underlying subscription for a different product does not automatically pay that bill.
OpenAI explicitly separates ChatGPT billing from the API platform. Using an OpenAI API key requires the appropriate API account and billing arrangement; paying for ChatGPT does not supply API credits for an unrelated application. OpenAI's billing guidance.
Check the account's usage records and current API prices if you choose this route. Estimate the actual workload rather than treating a short customer message as the full request. System instructions, relevant information and previous conversation can contribute to usage too.
A hosted assistant may include credits
Some services sell an assistant plan with a usage allowance. In that arrangement, the service pays for its infrastructure and provides you with the plan's stated capacity. You may not bring your own API account, but the service still has its own subscription and credit rules.
For example, Chatbase's pricing page lists message-credit allowances and additional-credit options. Read the rules for the model and functions you select. A message credit is a plan unit, not a universal measure of one finished customer conversation.
The important question is who supplies the model connection and who bills you. Included credits, an own-subscription connection and an API account should not be counted together unless your setup really uses all three.
Hosting, software and setup still need a budget
Avoid turning "no separate API bill" into "the whole website is free." The site still needs hosting, the software access you choose, configuration and care. Existing WordPress owners can install Niwa's standalone plugin without commissioning a new site.
Niwa Business is USD 150 for a custom WordPress website or migration, hosting, maintenance and AI tools adapted to the business. Request the billing schedule and exact coverage with the proposal. The AI website cost guide separates those costs so included services are counted once.
Confirm the connection before buying another account
Ask whoever sets up the website to identify the active connection mode, the account supplying it and the services billed outside the package. Then verify a real customer task and check the relevant account records.
If you see an API charge, establish which application, account and project produced it. If the assistant stops responding, inspect the error before assuming it needs more paid credits. Authentication, account permissions, provider allowances and website faults can produce different failures.
Ask Niwa about the connection suitable for your site. Share the website, the subscription you already use and the customer task you want to complete. Confirm the supported arrangement before opening another paid service.
