Can I Build a Website with AI for Free?

A free prototype can help you test your pages before paying for hosting. Understand what you can build, how to save it and what production still requires.

Yes, you can build a website prototype with AI for free if you use available free AI access and a free development environment. WordPress Playground gives you a way to explore WordPress in your browser before buying hosting. A prototype helps you test content and layout; a public business site still needs a suitable publishing arrangement and a plan for its operating costs.

We prefer a WordPress foundation because it gives the project a familiar content backend when you move toward production. Niwa can later add customer assistance to a working WordPress site through its standalone plugin. Niwa Business is a paid implementation offer, so it should be considered separately from a free prototype.

The useful question is what you need the free version to prove before you spend money.

Define a small prototype you can evaluate

Choose one customer journey and the pages it needs. For a local service, that might be a homepage, a service description and a contact-page layout. Use your real business facts and photographs you have permission to use.

Ask an AI assistant you already have access to for a page outline and draft text. Its free allowance and available features depend on the provider’s current terms. Keep a copy of useful output so the project does not depend on a conversation remaining accessible.

Check the facts yourself. AI can organize the information but should not fill missing prices, qualifications or service areas with invented details. Mark those decisions for the owner.

Set a practical acceptance question: can a visitor understand the service and find the intended next step? That makes the prototype useful even when it is not yet configured to receive enquiries.

Explore WordPress in Playground

Open the official WordPress Playground quick-start guide and follow its browser-based setup. You can experiment with WordPress pages and editing without first provisioning a conventional hosting account.

Use a block theme when you want to try the WordPress Site Editor. Add your approved page text, place the images and check how the layout behaves. Practice editing it manually after the initial AI-assisted preparation.

Keep this exercise focused on content and presentation. A contact form layout can show what information you intend to collect. Actual delivery, payments or externally connected services need their own supported configuration and tests in the intended environment.

The prototype should tell you what the finished site needs. Record any plugin requirement or design change that the business cannot operate comfortably through the editor.

Save the project in a form you understand

Playground’s current documentation describes browser storage and a ZIP export containing the site’s files and SQLite database. Export a copy of work you want to keep. Browser persistence is convenient but should not be the only copy of the project.

A Playground ZIP and a WordPress content export serve different purposes. The ZIP is a site archive with environment requirements. A content export transfers supported content records; it is not a complete replacement for every file, setting and integration.

Do not assume a Playground archive can be uploaded directly to any WordPress host as a finished production site. The quick-start guide describes the PHP and SQLite requirements for running an exported site. Plan the transfer according to the destination environment and inspect the result.

For a small prototype, keep a separate folder with approved text, original images and a page map. Those materials remain useful even if you choose to recreate the final pages on a conventional WordPress installation.

Identify the costs of going public

Before choosing a free hosted plan or paid hosting, check its current limits. Look at domain options, branding, page or storage allowances, export rights, available plugins and whether the business functions you need are supported. Free availability today does not establish permanent terms.

For self-hosted WordPress, list the costs you actually expect:

Requirement What to check
Domain Registration, renewal and account ownership
Hosting Initial price, renewal, resources and supported features
Business tools Free versus paid plugin functions and renewals
AI access Provider allowance, subscription or API billing
Operations Updates, backups, testing and someone to maintain the site

The WordPress and AI website guide explains the domain and hosting decisions. Hostinger offers guided WordPress setup. Review the live plan and renewal terms when you are ready to purchase.

Keep the first production site proportionate

Use what the prototype taught you to choose the production scope. A clear service page and a working enquiry route may be sufficient for the first release. Add ecommerce or appointments when the business needs them and can configure their real operating rules.

Test the public site separately after transfer or recreation. Check content, images, navigation and the actual enquiry destination. A successful local preview does not prove that hosting or an external service is configured correctly.

Maintain the site after launch. The official WordPress hardening guidance covers the continuing role of updates and appropriate access. Free software still needs someone responsible for its operation.

Decide whether live AI assistance belongs in your budget

A site built with AI can operate without an ongoing customer-facing AI service. When budgeting for production, decide whether an intelligent agent should also complete a customer task. Niwa uses your website’s business context and connected tools: a service customer can ask what a visit includes and book an available appointment in the conversation. Put that whole journey in your requirements, including the saved reservation, rather than budgeting only for a chat box.

Existing WordPress owners can use the standalone Niwa plugin. On a supported own-subscription connection, Niwa adds no extra AI usage fees or Niwa-imposed usage caps; the underlying provider’s terms and limits still apply, and API billing is separate. That does not make every part of running the website free.

Niwa Business is USD 150 and includes a custom WordPress website or migration, hosting, maintenance and AI adaptation. Send Niwa your prototype and required functions to confirm scope and payment terms.

Use the free prototype to make a better decision about those costs. Save the work, identify the real requirements and spend on the production functions the business can actually use.
