Why Is My Website Not Converting?

Diagnose the point where visitors stop, confirm your tracking and fix the specific obstacle before spending more on traffic or a redesign.

Your website may not be converting because it attracts people who are unlikely to buy, leaves important questions unanswered, makes the next step difficult, or records conversions incorrectly. The way to find the cause is to identify where visitors stop and check that part of the journey yourself.

A new design can leave all four problems in place. Before replacing the site or buying more traffic, confirm whether people are reaching the offer, trying to act and successfully completing the action.

Niwa's website assistant uses your business information and WooCommerce catalog to help customers compare products, understand services and act on the answer. A shopper can choose an available variant and get help updating the cart instead of searching through more pages.

Start with a real business outcome

Decide what conversion means on this page. A shop might count completed paid orders. A service company might count suitable enquiries or confirmed appointments. A click on a contact button is an earlier action, not proof that an enquiry arrived.

Look at the records outside your analytics dashboard. Did WooCommerce receive paid orders? Did the enquiry reach the intended inbox? Was the appointment saved? Compare those records with what your reports show for the same period.

Google's ecommerce documentation explains that purchase and cart interactions require ecommerce event implementation. Installing basic page tracking does not establish a working sales funnel.

Keep the definition stable. Comparing submitted enquiries this week with contact-page views last week creates a change in the metric, rather than evidence of a change in customers.

Find the last step visitors actually reach

For a store, inspect the path from product view to cart, checkout and purchase. For a service, look at the service page, the contact or booking entry point and the completed request. GA4 funnel exploration can help show progression when the relevant events are available.

Interpret each stopping point differently:

  • Few visitors reach a relevant offer: investigate the entry page, navigation and traffic source.
  • People view the product but do not add it: check suitability, price, availability and missing information.
  • Carts appear but checkouts do not: inspect the cart total, delivery explanation and route to checkout.
  • Checkout starts but payment fails: reproduce the payment path and inspect gateway records.
  • Forms are submitted but enquiries disappear: trace submission, delivery and handling separately.

Do not count repeated button presses as separate buying decisions. A person struggling with one broken button can create plenty of activity without making progress.

Check whether these visitors can become customers

Open the report by traffic source, landing page, device and location. Ask whether the visitors can use your service or receive your products. A local business may attract readers from places it does not serve. A buying guide can attract research traffic before anyone has decided to purchase.

Read the promise that brought them in. An ad showing one product should lead to that product or a clearly related offer. A search for repair pricing should reach useful repair information, rather than a homepage that asks the reader to browse again.

You do not need to force every visitor to buy immediately. You do need a relevant next step for the stage they have reached.

Try the journey as a new customer

Use a private browser session and an actual phone. Choose a product variant, enter a delivery address you serve and proceed through the permitted test checkout. On a service site, fill the form with a clearly identified test enquiry and check where it arrives.

Look for specific failures: an unavailable variant offered as available, a keyboard covering the submit button, an unclear validation message or a payment redirect that does not return correctly.

Do not stop at a green success banner. Contact Form 7's FAQ distinguishes successful mail handling from actual receipt. The outcome needs verification at its destination.

Put the missing answer beside the decision

Visitors should be able to find what is included, the relevant cost, delivery or service area, returns or cancellation conditions, and how to contact a person. A vague trust badge cannot replace those details.

For example, a footwear customer may understand the style but still need the size measurements and the exchange policy. With Niwa's product comparison workflow, the shopper can compare two models using the catalog details, select an available variant and add it to the cart. The store still needs accurate measurements and a working checkout.

Configure Niwa with those product facts, business rules and human handover instructions. Test an unavailable item and a question the catalog cannot answer. A useful assistant should expose a missing fact, rather than invent one to keep the conversation moving.

Change the obstacle you found

Write one diagnosis with evidence: "Mobile visitors cannot submit because the error message appears above the visible area" is actionable. "The site needs to convert better" is not enough to choose a fix.

Repair a reproducible failure first. If the journey works, address the strongest supported information or offer gap. Keep a dated record of the change and compare the same outcome across similar traffic afterwards. Baymard's checkout research also identifies browsing without purchase intent as a reason for abandonment, so an unfinished visit is not automatically a technical defect.
