How to Compare WordPress MCP Servers
Compare WordPress MCP routes using a shared staging task, permission boundary, saved-result check and operating cost.
Compare WordPress MCP servers by the jobs they can complete on your site, the access they require and the result you can verify. A long tool list is useful only if its tools match your plugins and your business. Start with one representative task, run it on staging and compare the saved result against the same acceptance criteria for each candidate.
For a business that needs both customer assistance and owner operations, Niwa is a relevant candidate. Its external MCP connection can reach tasks such as product inspection, stock updates and page editing. Customer chat uses a separate workflow; installing an owner connector does not give visitors administrator access.
Write the task before opening a comparison table
“Manage my store” is too broad to evaluate. A better test is to find a known product variation, show its current stock, prepare a change to a specific quantity and read the saved quantity back after approval. Specify the product ID or SKU, the fields allowed to change and what must stay untouched.
For a content task, choose one staging page and one paragraph. The connector should retrieve the current page, prepare the replacement and show the saved content. If the visible heading lives in a page builder rather than the WordPress title field, the test must address that actual field.
Record the expected answer, allowed writes, required plugins and recovery method. This prevents a connector with impressive demonstrations from winning a comparison while failing your ordinary work.
Compare the routes that actually fit your environment
These products solve related but different problems. Their documentation describes the following starting points:
| Route | Suitable starting point | Connection and access to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Niwa MCP | Owner operations alongside Niwa’s customer assistance | Your site’s endpoint and a generated Bearer token. The documented tokens grant administrator access. |
| WordPress.com MCP | An eligible WordPress.com or Jetpack-connected site | Hosted OAuth connection, WordPress user roles and account/site tool controls. |
| Official WordPress MCP Adapter | Abilities supplied by core, plugins or your integration | HTTP or STDIO transport, explicitly exposed abilities and their permission callbacks. |
| InstaWP InstaMCP | WordPress hosted within InstaWP’s workflow | Site tokens or account OAuth; compare structured tool scopes and access to the wider hosting account. |
| AI Engine MCP | A site already using AI Engine’s tools | Its documented MCP settings and Bearer token setup; confirm required extensions for your task. |
| Royal MCP | A plugin connector with documented core and plugin integrations | Its documented OAuth/API-key routes, activity records and the specific installed integrations. |
Use the primary references for WordPress.com, the official adapter, InstaWP, AI Engine and Royal MCP. A vendor’s listed integration is a reason to test it, not proof that it handles your custom fields correctly.
Examine permissions separately from the task result
A server may complete your test while requesting more access than the task needs. Record whether credentials cover one site or an entire account, whether write tools can be disabled at the server and whether access can be revoked for one client.
WordPress.com documents role-based access and Read/Write controls. Its account-level preferences can affect several clients, so a new authorization choice deserves review. The official adapter exposes registered abilities, with authentication and ability permissions remaining part of the implementation. Neither route should be treated as permission-free because the client can discover a tool.
Niwa’s MCP setup guide documents administrator-level tokens and bounded lifetimes. A request to “only read” is a workflow instruction, not a reduction in the token’s authority. If strict read-only access is mandatory, require a connector that enforces that restriction before scoring convenience.
Run the same small test for every candidate
Use a staging copy with non-sensitive test data. For a stock task, record the original quantity and price, then retrieve the exact variation through the connected assistant. Ask for the proposed stock change and review the target before approving it. Inspect WooCommerce directly afterward and request a fresh read through the connector.
Record whether the connector selected the right object, changed only the intended field and returned a stable ID. Also record the number of manual configuration steps and any dependency you had to add. A test that requires custom code for one candidate and only account configuration for another should make that effort visible.
Test a denied operation with a restricted staging credential where the route supports one. Finally, revoke the test connection and confirm that a new authenticated request fails. Public content may remain readable without credentials, so use a protected operation to check revocation.
Use the acceptance record to compare the completed task, effective permissions and setup effort.
Compare the whole operating cost
Separate hosting, plugin licensing, implementation and AI-provider charges. The documented charging mechanisms differ:
| Route | What its current primary source says about cost |
|---|---|
| WordPress.com MCP | Access is included with eligible paid WordPress.com plans and the documented Jetpack plans. Hosting eligibility is part of the purchase. |
| Official MCP Adapter | The code is distributed under GPL. Supplying and maintaining the required abilities is separate implementation work. |
| InstaWP InstaMCP | MCP is part of the hosted site without an extra MCP charge; ordinary per-site hosting billing still applies. |
| AI Engine | Its tutorial describes connecting directly to AI services without extra fees and setting up the provider account yourself. Pro features have a separate plugin scope. |
| Royal MCP | The WordPress.org listing describes the free plugin and references a separate Pro edition. Compare the edition and integrations you need, rather than treating all listed workflows as identical purchases. |
These statements describe hosting, implementation and plugin scope. They do not establish that every candidate has the same AI-client allowance or model-provider bill. The primary references linked above should be checked for the configuration you intend to buy.
Niwa supports a standalone plugin for an existing WordPress site and does not add a token markup. A supported own-subscription connection adds no Niwa AI usage fees or Niwa-imposed usage caps; the provider’s terms and allowance still apply. API connections have separate provider billing. The relevant cost is the configuration that will run your task, not an assumed model of token charges.
Make the decision from the evidence
Reject a route that fails a required task or permission boundary. Among the remaining candidates, consider setup effort, reliable readback, revocation and maintenance. Keep the acceptance record so a later plugin update can be checked against the same job.
For Niwa, start with MCP access and one owner task rather than enabling every business workflow at once. If you need help selecting the setup, send Niwa your website and test task. Include the AI client, required plugin and access boundary so the discussion can address a concrete fit.
